Ghana Gas Authority has commenced works to build hundreds of houses for the victims of tidal waves disaster in Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region.
The housing project is situated on an island which is about five miles away from the Gulf of Guinea in Agavedzi.
According to the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ketu South, Maxwell Lukudor, the Ghana Gas Authority made available some GHC 2 million for the project.
He said the project consists of 15 houses, a school and health facility, extension of electricity, water and construction of road that connects the island to the main Keta-Aflao Urban road.
“We will be starting with 15 (detached houses), two bedrooms houses, with the road to the place, electricity projects, water to the places and we are planning to get 100 of that two-bedroom unit. We will have a place for school, a place for CHP Compound (to be built in the new settlement),” he said.
Lukudor said his outfit has pleaded to both government and non-governmental organisations including individuals to come to their aid by building more houses for the victims.
However, municipal engineers have been deployed to the site for feasibility studies and demarcation of the plots.
Situation on the ground
Asaase News observed that, most of the victims of Sunday’s disaster in Agavedzi, Salakope, Amutinu and parts of Keta have relocated to nearby communities to seek shelter from friends and families, while others who have no place to run to are forced to remain in their flooded rooms.
Commercial operations including fishing and salt mining have slowed in the region including academic activities.
