Former men’s national team captain Stephen Appiah has urged the Black Stars to “play their hearts out” when Ghana makes its 24th appearance at the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations in Cote D I’voire next year.

Ghana has been drawn in Group B alongside Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique in the tournament which will feature 24 African countries. The Black Stars will be looking to clinch the title for the first time since 1982 as they begin the group stage against Cape Verde on January 14, 2024.

The 2023 AFCON is scheduled from Saturday, January 13 – Sunday, February 11, 2024.

Stephen speaking on the sideline of the unveiling of the AFCON trophy as part of a tour in Accra on Monday said, “It’s very important, being part of the 22 players that will be selected to go and play in this tournament is very, very useful for them.”

“Nobody should tell them how important the AFCON is. So they should go out there and play their hearts out, and I’m sure that something good will come out.”

The Africa Cup of Nations trophy was unveiled here in Accra on Monday, November 27, as part of a tour in some selected countries.

Accra will host the trophy for two days as pre-tournament activities continue ahead of the  34th edition of the tournament in Ivory Coast in January.

Appiah who is a Brand Ambassador for TotalEnergies added, “The trophy being here symbolizes hope because we know what is going to happen next year [from] January to February.”

“This is a trophy that I competed and fought for. I didn’t have the chance to lift and seeing it here I am so happy.”
