VIDEO: From security guard to petroleum firm CEO – the story of Millicent Bruce

Career progression in whichever field you choose can be daunting and demanding for many, especially if you do not have the focus, perseverance and willpower to achieve your goals.

One woman who has shown that resilience, determination and focus is the chief executive of Kwamms Petroleum, Millicent Bruce.

Bruce began her working life as a security guard and served in the security industry for 12 years, but gradually built a career in the energy sector through sheer dedication.

She worked as a marketing executive with an oil firm after studying supply chain for her first degree.

Her current work focuses on installing tanks and dispensers (fuel pumps) for institutions and individuals.

Go the extra mile

Sharing her story with students from tertiary institutions at the second edition of the Energy Career Seminar organised by Energy Quest Foundation in Accra, Bruce advised students to go the extra mile to achieve their dreams.

“There is nothing as interesting in life as what I have experienced: starting life as a security lady, studying to become an expert in investigations and security, moving through to be in authority of health and safety and firefighting gave me the hope that the sky was a starting point,” Bruce said.

“I kept moving till I found myself in the classroom studying supply chain. Unilever Ghana Ltd gave me the chance to practise what I studied in school, which comprises procurement, planning, production, distribution and warehousing. I didn’t stop there, I kept striving …” she said.

Millicent Bruce shares her experience in the video clip attached below:
