UniMAC-GIJ hosts public lecture on innovative journalism and social change

It forms part of activities to bring together academia and professionals to deliberate on issues of public interest

The University of Media, Arts, and Communication (UniMAC-GIJ) will host its maiden 2023 public lecture on Thursday 26 January 2023 at the main auditorium of the North Dzorwulu campus.

It forms part of activities to bring together academia and professionals to deliberate on issues of public interest under the auspices of the Directorate of Research, Innovation, and Development (DRID).

The director of DRID, Etse Sikanku, said that the public lecture is in line with the vision and mission of UniMAC as well as journalism’s objective to champion the cause of the less privileged in society.

“UniMAC’s mission is to bridge the gap between the professional world and academia, as it offers the opportunity for preeminent persons to share their knowledge and experience on various issues of national concern in a very thought-provoking manner,” he said.

The topic of the lecture is: “Journalism, innovation and development: Frontiers for advocacy and social change.” The reigning Ghana Journalist of the Year, Portia Gabor of TV3 is the main speaker.

Sikanku said the lecture topic “was selected in order to deliberate on the contemporary role of the media in bringing about social change.”

“The lecture will enable the university and public to learn from Garbor’s experiences while discussing how to make the media more relevant to the lives of people in a fast-changing world,” the communication analyst and senior lecturer said.

The event is open to academics, media members, students, and the general public. It is one of the many public lectures UniMAC-GIJ has lined up for the year in its quest to shape and contribute to public discourse.
