Why are Japanese now developing love for Ghana’s premier league?

In recent times, Japanese nationals have had to visit the various league centres to watch local matches. Their mission is to give support to a particular player

The love for Ghana’s Premier League is gradually gaining international traction, especially from the Japanese community in the West African country.

In recent times, Japanese nationals have had to visit the various league centres to watch local matches. Their mission is to give support to their only national playing in the top-flight league.

Forward Jindo Morishita has made history as the first Japanese to play in the Ghana Premier League.

Morishita joined Accra Great Olympics in January after playing for Division One side Ebusua Dwarfs.

Morishita was born in Japan but was raised in The Netherlands. Having played in Indonesia, he later enrolled in the University of Tsukuba, featuring for the men’s football team.

In 2019, the Japanese signed his first professional contract, sealing an agreement with Zambian Super League side FC Muza.

Although Morishita has been in Ghana for some months now, his decision to join Accra Great Olympics seems to have boosted the love for the Japanese community to visit the stadium whenever his team is playing.

This development could help revive the love for Ghana’s premier league which has in recent times witnessed low patronage from Ghanaians.

The addition of Morishita has not only attracted new fan base for Accra Great Olympics, but also led to the attraction of new Japanese sponsors for the team.

For now, one can say Morishita is not only enjoying his stint with the Ghanaian club but also Ghana and its local foods like fufu.
