Black Sherif: I would have been a spare parts dealer

The Ghanaian rapper says dealing in vehicle spare parts is a booming business in Konongo, where he hails from in the Ashanti Region

Ghanaian rapper, Mohammed Ismail Sherif, popularly known as Black Sherif has said that he would have ended up as a spare parts dealer if his music career had failed.

“I would have been a spare parts dealer if my music career didn’t succeed,” he told Naa Ashorkor on Asaase Radio’s Between Hours show on Tuesday (5 April).

“It’s a good business in Konongo, where I grew up. My father owns a spare parts shop and I would have been working with him, if all this didn’t happen.”

The 20-year-old said he regrets not discovering his talent early, describing it as “my biggest mistake.”

“I regret not writing music early,” he said.

His new single Kwaku the Traveller is currently trending No. 1 in Ghana and No. 8 in Nigeria. He is also the second most streamed hip hop artiste song on audiomack.

Style of music

Kwaku the Traveller, as he is known by his fans, said his style of music is inspired by songs he heard growing up – a mixture of highlife and reggae.

“My style of music is inspired by things I used to hear growing up, my mom used to listen to highlife and my dad reggae.”

“I like to be involved in everything including making of the beats for my songs, I’m hands on when it comes to everything. I record a lot so I’m always contemplating what to release at the right time.”

Advising upcoming acts, Black Sherif said: “I don’t believe in copying others, I always support staying true to oneself. I never try to be like anyone. All my life I always try to be the best me, because I believe there is more to explore in me.”
