North East Region: British envoy supports Gambaga Witches’ Camp

The camp currently accommodates 90 alleged witches and two wizards who were accused and banished from their various communities

Harriet Thompson, the British high commissioner to Ghana, has visited the Gambaga Witches’ Camp in the North East Region and donated some food items to support the inhabitants.

The food items presented to them on Thursday (24 August) comprised rice and edible oil.

“From what you said and from what we heard at the chief’s palace, you are grateful for how you feel here. You’ve been given a home when you didn’t have one. So, we are grateful to the Gambarana for what he has done to support you,” Thompson said after paying a courtesy call on the Nayiri and the Gambarana before presenting the items.

She added that the British high commission in Ghana is elated about the witchcraft accusation law that is before the Parliament of Ghana, and she desires that it will bring a solution to the attacks on the accused persons.

“We are happy that this law has been put before Parliament to stop the continuous accusation of witchcraft because we don’t want other people to be treated the way that some of you have been treated,” Thompson added.

She said she will continue to work with Songtaaba and other people who are supporting the alleged witches in the country to ensure that their human rights are respected.

The leadership of the camp in Gambaga thanked the senior British envoy for her visit and the kind gesture.
