OSP clears Adu Boahen of corruption allegations

President Akufo-Addo referred Charles Adu Boahen to the Special Prosecutor to investigate allegations levelled against the minister in the documentary “Galamsey Economy”

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has cleared Charles Adu Boahen, a former minister of state in the Ministry of Finance, of all allegations of corruption.

“Though the conduct of Adu Boahen amounts to trading in influence or influence peddling, which is closely associated with corruption, there is no actual criminal prohibition of his acts in respect of which the OSP has a mandate to further act,” said the OSP in a report published today (Monday 30 October 2023).

“On that reckoning, the Special Prosecutor directs the closure, at this time, of the investigation in respect of allegations of corruption and corruption-related offences involving Charles Adu Boahen contained in the investigative documentary titled Galamsey Economy published by Tiger Eye PI.

“The investigation may be reopened should the circumstances and further facts so dictate.”

Background

Last year, the Office of the Special Prosecutor launched investigations into the allegations levelled against Charles Adu Boahen in the Galamsey Economy exposé.

A statement from the OSP issued on Tuesday (15 November 2022) said: “The Office of the Special Prosecutor has promptly commenced investigations into the action of Charles Adu Boahen and any other implicated person contained in the investigative exposé Galamsey Economy.”

On Monday (14 November 2022), President Akufo-Addo terminated Adu Boahen’s appointment following reports of the allegations set out in a documentary, directed by the investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas.

“After being made aware of the allegations levelled against the minister in the exposé Galamsey Economy, the president spoke to Adu Boahen, after which he took the decision to terminate his appointment, and also to refer the matter to the Special Prosecutor for further investigations,” a statement from the Office of the President said.
